The 5th Luso-Brazilian Congress on Sustainable Building Materials | Construção 2024 Congress, held from November 6 to 8 at Instituto Superior Técnico, concluded with a stellar recognition of CERIS PhD students. During the closing ceremony, CERIS researchers received top honours for their exceptional contributions to sustainable building materials.

Best Paper Award
Md Abu Toyob Shahid was awarded the coveted Best Paper Award for his groundbreaking work titled “Natural weathering of a composite produced with basalt fibres and partially bio-based unsaturated polyester resin.” Shahid, as the first author, collaborated with CERIS researchers Mário Garrido and João R. Correia on this innovative study that explores environmentally sustainable composites.

Honourable Mentions
In addition to the Best Paper Award, CERIS researchers earned two Honourable Mentions for their pioneering research:

  • Jéssica Deise Bersch was recognised for her work “Desempenho individual e combinado de produtos fotocatalítico e anti-graffiti em revestimento de fachada” (Individual and combined performance of photocatalytic and anti-graffiti products in façade cladding). Her co-authors included CERIS member Inês Flores-Colen and other distinguished researchers.
  • Ghandy Lamaa received an Honourable Mention for his paper “Optimising accelerated carbonation curing for enhanced mechanical performance of alkali-activated materials,” co-authored with CERIS members António P.C. Duarte, Jorge de Brito, and Rui V. Silva.

The CERIS Executive Board has extended its congratulations to all awardees for their outstanding achievements, highlighting their significant contributions to the field of sustainable construction and material science. The awards reaffirm the excellence of research and innovation of CERIS PhD students in advancing sustainable building practices.
