The University of Lisbon has achieved a remarkable 20th position worldwide in Civil Engineering in the 2025 ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS), rising from 44th place in the previous edition.
This result places the University of Lisbon among the top 20 institutions worldwide in Civil Engineering and as the third-best-ranked non-Chinese institution, behind only Delft University of Technology and Imperial College London.
This achievement reflects the quality, international impact and sustained excellence of research developed in the field of Civil Engineering at the University of Lisbon, with a significant contribution from CERIS – Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability (CERIS IST) and DECivil – Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environment at Instituto Superior Técnico.
The substantial improvement in the ranking — from 44th to 20th worldwide — highlights the growing international recognition of the research produced by the University of Lisbon across the broad field of Civil Engineering.
