CERIS AT A GLANCE

CERIS - CIVIL ENGINEERING RESEARCH AND INNOVATION FOR SUSTAINABILITY

CERIS – Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability – is an FCT-registered research unit operating in the Civil Engineering area. It is hosted by the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Georesources (DECivil) of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), University of Lisbon (ULisboa).

In 2023, CERIS had 157 PhD members, 24 PhD collaborators and 204 collaborators without PhD, supported by 15 administrative and technical staff.

CERIS was created in 2015 through the merge of CEHIDRO (Centre of Hydraulics, Water Resources and Environment), CESUR (Centre for Urban and Regional Systems) and ICIST (Institute of Structural Engineering, Territory and Construction), 3 units from the 1970s. Their merging in CERIS enhances our comprehensive thematic coverage, in depth and scope, and promotes synergies in the inherently multidisciplinary Built and Natural Environment sector, in a more integrated manner. This has also enabled an increase in the global critical mass, resulting in a more competitive profile for funded research calls. It has facilitated a shift towards a more problem-oriented approach, allowing to address complex societal challenges more effectively and to achieve greater administrative efficiency.

CERIS is dedicated to fostering a culture of international and interterritorial collaboration, actively recruiting highly talented PhD students. CERIS integrates PhD researchers affiliated with several national institutions such as University of Algarve, University of Beira Interior, Nova University of Lisbon, University of Madeira, ISEL – Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa, Instituto ISEC – Coimbra Institute of Engineering, Itecons – Instituto de Investigação e Desenvolvimento Tecnológico para a Construção, Energia, Ambiente e Sustentabilidade, BUILT CoLAB, C5LAB – Sustainable Construction Materials Association, ESTBarreiro/IPS – Barreiro School of Technology, Universidade Lusófona, Teixeira Duarte, Sival – Gessos Especiais, Lda., and Instituto Politécnico de Leiria. CERIS has connections to several foreign institutions, such as the University Estadual Campinas (Brazil), Imperial College London, University of Western Australia, ETH Zurich, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, National Technical University of Athens, Trinity College Dublin, IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, and many other universities worldwide, private companies, and foundations.
