The Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) will take part in the European Researchers’ Night on September 27th, held at the Oeiras Marina. This event will showcase the Horizon 2020 SCORE Project (Smart Control of Climate Resilience in European Coastal Cities), a European Union-funded initiative aimed at enhancing the climate resilience of coastal cities. The Portuguese partners in the project include IST-ID and the Oeiras City Council.
The CERIS/IST team, which is composed of Professor Maria Manuela Portela, Dr. Luis Angel Espinosa, and student João Pegas, will contribute to the evening’s activities by promoting awareness of climate change, particularly among the younger generation. Targeting primary and secondary school students, the event will feature a comic strip created by the Oeiras City Council, already distributed to local schools, as well as an interactive quiz focused on climate change, coastal cities, and the role of citizen science. This quiz is expected to be made available to the public during the event by the Oeiras Municipality.
The SCORE Project, which has been running for four years, addresses critical climate-related challenges, including rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and extreme weather events. Through an integrated approach combining smart technologies with nature-based solutions, SCORE aims to develop innovative tools and methodologies to strengthen citizen engagement, improve monitoring and projections of climate and erosion, and facilitate knowledge-sharing.
Ultimately, the project seeks to empower communities to explore and implement mitigation actions to address the growing risks posed by climate change.
This event at the Oeiras Marina promises to be an important platform for engaging the public in crucial conversations about the future of coastal cities and their resilience in the face of increasing environmental challenges.
