Inaugural Lecture by Professor Isabel Boavida Highlights Sustainable Hydropower Challenges
On 10 April 2026, Professor Isabel Boavida delivered her Inaugural Lecture at DECivil, bringing together members of the IST and CERIS communities for a well-attended and engaging session.
Titled “Navigating the challenges of sustainable hydropower in a world in transition”, the lecture addressed the complex relationship between hydropower development and environmental sustainability. Professor Boavida explored the impacts of hydraulic structures on river ecosystems, the trade-offs associated with the energy transition, and the need for integrated, multi-scale approaches combining ecohydraulics, environmental monitoring, and impact assessment.
The presentation highlighted both challenges and opportunities in aligning clean energy production with ecological integrity and societal needs, drawing on recent research and international perspectives.
The event was marked by engagement from the academic community, reflecting the relevance of the topic and the interest in advancing sustainable solutions in hydraulic and environmental engineering.
CERIS warmly congratulates Professor Isabel Boavida on this important milestone and her inspiring lecture, and wishes her continued success in her academic and research career.
