Portugal Hosts the 7th fib Congress to Discuss the Future of Structural Concrete

More than one thousand engineers, researchers, designers and construction professionals from around 70 countries will gather in Lisbon from 15 to 19 June 2026 for the 7th fib Congress, the flagship event of the International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib), held every four years.

Organised by GPBE – Portuguese Group for Structural Concrete (fib Portugal) and Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, the Congress will address the technological and environmental challenges facing the construction sector over the coming decades. Under the theme "Structural Concrete 2050: Towards Carbon Neutrality, AI Design and Robotic Construction", the event will explore how emerging technologies and sustainable solutions are transforming the way infrastructure is designed, built and maintained.

The technical programme includes more than 840 scientific and technical papers, eight keynote lectures delivered by internationally recognised experts and around 150 parallel sessions covering topics such as low-carbon materials, artificial intelligence, digital twins, durability, resilience, seismic engineering, rehabilitation and robotic construction.

"The fib Congress is a unique opportunity to bring together researchers, designers, contractors, owners and industry representatives from all over the world to exchange knowledge and discuss the future of structural concrete," says Eduardo Júlio, Chair of the 7th fib Congress.

The Congress will also host the fib Awards Ceremony, recognising outstanding contributions to structural concrete and celebrating some of the most remarkable concrete structures completed worldwide in recent years. Participants will further have the opportunity to attend technical visits to major Portuguese engineering projects and the exhibition "Portuguese Bridges: A Tribute to Edgar Cardoso", dedicated to one of Portugal's most influential bridge engineers and a former professor at Instituto Superior Técnico.

By bringing together academia, industry and professional practice, the event aims to strengthen international cooperation and contribute to the development of safer, more efficient and more sustainable infrastructure.
