Miguel Tavares receives Honourable Mention in Prémio REN 2025

Miguel Tavares, a CERIS PhD candidate at Instituto Superior Técnico, received an honourable mention in the 30th edition of the Prémio REN for his Master’s dissertation. The award ceremony occurred on December 4, 2025, at the Ritz Hotel in Lisbon, attended by Minister of Energy and Environment Maria da Graça Carvalho. Each honourable mention carries a €2,500 prize, recognising excellence in energy-related research from Portuguese universities. 

Under the supervision of Professor Helena M. Ramos (CERIS), Miguel Tavares’ work (Hybrid optimised energy solutions based on pumped-storage-hydro and surge-free-surface flow analysis) focuses on energy themes, aligning with the prize’s emphasis on variable renewable energies and hydrogen transition. Professor Helena M. Ramos congratulated celebrated the achievement on LinkedIn, noting Miguel Tavares as a scholarship holder of the HY4RES project. Miguel Tavares earned this honourable mention alongside Sofia Andrade from the Faculty of Sciences of Universidade de Lisboa. 

REN’s initiative of Prémio REN, one of Portugal’s oldest scientific awards, strengthens academia-industry ties in energy.
