CERIS researchers were once again recognised for their excellence and innovation at the 17th Congresso da Água, organised by the Associação Portuguesa dos Recursos Hídricos (APRH). During the closing session, held on 13 October 2024 at the Fundação Cidade de Lisboa, several awards distinguished contributions from CERIS researchers in the field of water resources.
Double Recognition for PhD Candidate Rafael Francisco
Rafael Francisco, PhD candidate at CERIS, received two distinctions from APRH:
- The APRH Young Researchers Award (ex aequo), for his master’s dissertation “Predicting river discharges with deep learning models” (supervised by CERIS member José Pedro Matos).
- An Honourable Mention in the Revelation Award, for the work “Simulação de escoamento em bacias hidrográficas portuguesas não monitorizadas: o poder da Inteligência Artificial”, presented in April in the 17th Congresso da Água in Lagos (8-11 April 2025), developed under his doctoral research and co-authored with José Pedro Matos (CERIS member).
These recognitions highlight the growing relevance of artificial intelligence in advancing hydrological modelling and the sustainable management of water resources.
Innovation Award for Team Including CERIS Researchers
The APRH Innovation Award was attributed to the multidisciplinary team behind the work “Tsunami em Lisboa. Da caracterização da inundação à perceção do risco”, authored by Rui M. L. Ferreira (CERIS member), Cristiana Guarda, Mário Lopes (CERIS member), Mónica Amaral Ferreira (CERIS collaborator), Carla Pousada, Cláudia Pinto, Raquel Milho, and Margarida Castro-Martins. The study addresses the tsunami hazard in Lisbon, combining engineering characterisation and risk perception analysis.
CERIS congratulates its researchers on these distinctions, which highlight the unit’s ongoing contribution to excellence and innovation in water resources research.
