Teresa Alvarez, a researcher at CERIS and a PhD student at Instituto Superior Técnico, was awarded the APRH Young Researchers Prize (ex aequo) during the 17th Water Congress, held in Lagos from 8 to 11 April. This biennial award, presented by the Portuguese Water Resources Association (APRH), recognises the best PhD and MSc theses in the field of Water Resources.
In her PhD thesis in Civil Engineering, supervised by Professor Rui M.L. Ferreira (CERIS) and co-supervised by Eng. Teresa Viseu (LNEC), Teresa Alvarez conducted experimental research on the failure of homogeneous and zoned earth dams. Her work resulted in theoretical advances, tools for assessing erosive processes, and important considerations for mitigating risks of dam failure.
This distinction highlights the quality of the research carried out at CERIS and the valuable contributions of its young researchers and members to advancing knowledge in the water resources field.
