Professor José Saldanha Matos Delivers Jubilee Lecture “Beyond Water” at Instituto Superior Técnico

The Congress Centre of Instituto Superior Técnico welcomed a full auditorium on 14 May 2026 for the Jubilee Lecture of Professor José Saldanha Matos, entitled "Beyond Water". The ceremony brought together colleagues, researchers, students, institutional representatives, friends and members of the wider Técnico community to celebrate the remarkable academic and professional career of one of the most influential figures in the field of water and environmental engineering in Portugal.

Professor José Saldanha Matos has developed an outstanding national and international career in the areas of water supply, sanitation, urban drainage and environmental engineering. Throughout several decades at Instituto Superior Técnico, he has contributed significantly to teaching, research, scientific dissemination and engineering practice, while also assuming prominent roles in national and international organisations connected to the water sector.

The session included institutional interventions and tribute speeches from colleagues and collaborators, who highlighted not only Professor Saldanha Matos’ scientific achievements and leadership, but also his human, humble and generous character, repeatedly recognised as one of the defining marks of his academic journey and relationship with students, colleagues and collaborators.

In his lecture, “Beyond Water”, Professor José Saldanha Matos shared reflections on the evolution of engineering, sustainability, water management and the broader societal role of science and universities.
