Three researchers from CERIS, Carlos Oliveira Cruz, Cristina Matos Silva and Maria da Glória Gomes, were distinguished in the 2025 edition of the University of Lisbon / Caixa Geral de Depósitos Scientific Awards, which honour outstanding scientific production and impact across various fields. The awards ceremony took place on 25 June 2025 at the Congress Centre of Pavilhão de Portugal, as part of the Scientific Seminar Series at ULisboa.
Carlos Oliveira Cruz was awarded the Scientific Prize in Civil Engineering, with the jury emphasising his “multidisciplinarity and the search for new areas in Civil Engineering.” Reflecting on the recognition, Carlos highlighted that “this award is particularly relevant in a week where a new ranking places Civil Engineering as the most competitive scientific area of ULisboa at an international level (among the best in the world). It is possible to do great science in Portugal. Science is the main lever for the development of the country (and the world).”
Cristina Matos Silva was also recognised in the field of Civil Engineering, receiving an Honourable Mention, while Maria da Glória Gomes was distinguished with an Honourable Mention in Environmental and Energy Engineering. These recognitions further reinforce the excellence and impact of research conducted at CERIS.
The ULisboa/CGD Scientific Awards are delivered annually and aim to promote scientific research and reward the merit of researchers working at the University of Lisbon, contributing to the international visibility and competitiveness of Portuguese science. Each award is valued at €6,500 and serves as an institutional acknowledgment of the recipients’ contributions to the advancement of knowledge in their scientific fields.
