On October 31, 2024, CERIS actively participated in RISCODay’2024, held at the University of Aveiro. Organized by RISCO (Risks and Sustainability in Construction), the event served as a platform to showcase ongoing research and spark discussions on pressing challenges in the built environment.
Two CERIS PhD students made notable contributions to the event:
- Dany Kassim, supervised by CERIS members Jorge de Brito, Rui V. Silva, and Hawreen Ahmed, presented in Panel #1 – Assessment and Mitigation of Risks in the Built Environment. Their presentation, titled “Carbon-enhanced alkali-activated aluminosilicate industrial wastes as full replacement of ordinary Portland cement,” highlighted innovative solutions in sustainable construction materials.
- Maria Teresa Ferreira, under the supervision of CERIS members António Aguiar Costa and José Dinis Silvestre, delivered a presentation in Panel #2 – Sustainable Solutions for the Built Environment. Her talk, “The Twin Transition in Action: A BIM-based LCA tool,” explored the integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tools to enhance sustainability.
In addition to these academic contributions, CERIS leadership actively engaged in strategic discussions during the event:
- Professor Rodrigo Gonçalves (Coordinator of CERIS NOVA Hub), Professor Nuno Simões (representing CERIS Coimbra Hub), and Professor Dídia Covas (President of CERIS) participated in Activity #3 – Building Partnerships, chaired by Romeu Vicente (Coordinator of RISCO).
This session spotlighted the planned 2025 merger between CERIS and RISCO, which will create the CERIS Aveiro Hub. Discussions emphasized the strong existing collaborations and the exciting potential for future partnerships, setting the stage for an even more impactful research network.
