Civil engineering industries are presently facing highly contrasting conditions throughout the world. In less developed countries, there is a great need for methods of production based on standard technologies, whereas more developed countries face strong competition combined with increasingly demanding requirements for both eco-efficiency and high-performance. Therefore, the sustained growth of the sector will have to rely on innovation in product development, enhanced through a deep and solid synergetic relationship between industry and research entities.
This thematic strand embraces research activities whose main purpose is to improve the competitiveness of civil engineering industries, by developing innovative products and procedures, and by improving the efficiency of existing ones. The applied research to be conducted focuses on the development of projects with a strong emphasis on “idea to business”, implying a robust involvement of industrial partners and making use of the interdisciplinary nature of CERIS. Strengthening of existing collaborations with the industry will be encouraged.
The Portuguese Technological Platform for Construction (PTPC), whose university-industry work groups are already developing proposals for a wealth of new projects, will be an important partner in this context.
