THEMATIC STRANDS

RESPONSE TO NATURAL AND SOCIETAL CHANGES

Coordinator: Manuel Duarte Pinheiro

This thematic strand addresses issues related to the characterisation, mitigation, and adaptation to natural and societal changes, from “business as usual” to a more sustainable built environment.

Those issues of particular interest concern developing relevant policies and procedures and designing and operating a built environment for a sustainable interaction between humankind and nature. Climate change, circular economy, digitalisation, and happiness are important drivers, forcing adaptation measures and new solutions in virtually all economic and social activities and social life areas.

Increasing the awareness of ecosystems dynamic, the scarcity of resources, and carrying capacity challenges other research dimensions to ensure a balanced life quality. Complex natural and societal changes need deeper understanding and complex responses across all domains and at multiple scales. The main research areas of this thematic strand are as follows:

  • Understanding the complexity of natural and societal changes regarding adaptation and resilience, competition and mitigation, path dependence, emergence, self-organisation, and ecosystem mechanisms.
  • Develop systemic solutions to work with nature, including improving governance, seeking better integration of policies, new flexible planning and management tools, and searching for new methods, tools, and devices for efficiency, economy, and equity concerning energy, resources, and the materials used.
  • Enhancing the tools to respond adaptively to natural and societal changes concerning information and communication technologies, computation, and network systems provides the platform for designing more intelligent and interconnected tools and smarter buildings, infrastructures, urban zones and services.
