Inaugural Lecture “Navigating the challenges of sustainable hydropower in a world in transition” by Professor Isabel Boavida

Professor Isabel Boavida holds a degree in Environmental Engineering from NOVA School of Science and Technology, an M.Sc. in Hydraulics and Water Resources, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa. She is currently an Assistant Professor, with research focusing on ecohydraulics and the ecological impacts of hydropower. Her work integrates experimental approaches, numerical modelling, and environmental impact assessment, contributing to sustainable water and energy management.
In this lecture, Isabel explores the environmental impacts of hydraulic structures on river ecosystems, addressing the trade-offs between energy transition and biodiversity loss. Drawing on recent research, she presents a multi-scale approach to understanding and mitigating these impacts, highlighting the need for more holistic and adaptive strategies to align clean energy production with ecological integrity.
We look forward to see you there!
