CERIS researcher Daniela Rodrigues among finalists of the Young Paper Award
We are delighted to share the recognition received by Daniela Rodrigues, a PhD student in Civil Engineering at the University of Aveiro and a researcher at CERIS – Civil Engineering Research and Innovation for Sustainability. She was the only Portuguese finalist in the Young Paper Award competition, held as part of the 13th International Conference on Geosynthetics (13ICG), which took place in Montreal, Canada, from 13 to 17 September 2026.
Among 51 submissions, Daniela Rodrigues's paper was selected as one of the eight finalists worldwide in the competition promoted by the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS). She was the only Portuguese representative among the finalists.
The paper, entitled "Impacts of geosynthetics on unpaved road construction: Life cycle perspective", was developed under the supervision of Professor Joaquim Macedo, Professor Margarida Pinho-Lopes and Professor Ana Cláudia Dias. Professors Joaquim Macedo and Margarida Pinho Lopes are also researchers at CERIS. The paper was presented before an international expert jury as part of the competition.
The study addresses the impacts of using geosynthetics in unpaved road construction from an innovative life-cycle perspective, highlighting the contribution of research to more sustainable solutions and advanced engineering.
This recognition highlights the quality and international visibility of the research developed at the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Aveiro and within CERIS, as well as its contribution to more sustainable and innovative approaches in civil engineering.
