Remembering Luís Filipe Tavares Ribeiro: A Visionary Legacy in Groundwater Science, Culture and Music

On 31 August 2026, the Hydrogeology Journal published a special tribute to Luís Filipe Tavares Ribeiro, former Associate Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico and researcher at CERIS, celebrating his remarkable scientific career and his lasting contribution to the understanding of groundwater and its connections with society, culture and the humanities.

The article, “Luís Ribeiro: A visionary mind bridging groundwater science, culture and music through an interdisciplinary and humanistic legacy”, was authored by Tibor Y. Stigter, João Nascimento, Maria Teresa Condesso de Melo and Teresita Betancur-Vargas, with João Nuno da Palma Nascimento and Maria Teresa Condesso de Melo representing CERIS among the authors.

A life dedicated to water, science and knowledge

Luís Ribeiro was a Mining Engineer and Associate Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, where he dedicated more than three decades to teaching, research and the advancement of hydrogeology. His scientific work covered a wide range of topics, including groundwater resources, groundwater-dependent ecosystems, climate change, aquifer modelling, geostatistics and water management.

Throughout his career, he coordinated more than 30 national and international research projects and established collaborations across Europe, Latin America and North Africa. He was also the author or co-author of more than 500 scientific publications.

Beyond his scientific achievements, Luís Ribeiro stood out for his interdisciplinary and humanistic vision. His fascination with the relationship between water, culture and music led him to explore scientific themes through artistic and cultural perspectives, creating bridges between disciplines that are rarely brought together.

This tribute recalls not only his scientific achievements, but also the curiosity, creativity and humanistic spirit that shaped his work and continue to inspire those who knew him and those who encounter his legacy today.
