Professor Tiago Miguel Ferreira, a faculty member at the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environment (DECivil) of Instituto Superior Técnico and a researcher at CERIS, is a co-author of the reconnaissance report on the magnitude 6.0 earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan on 31 August 2025. He contributed to this work as a member of the Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT).
The report, published on 5 March by the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), results from a collaborative effort involving EEFIT, the Association Française du Génie Parasismique (AFPS), the NED University of Engineering and Technology, and RedR. It presents comprehensive field observations and technical analyses covering key aspects of the event, including earthquake characterisation, emergency response and relief operations, geotechnical failures, and the performance of buildings and infrastructure.
The document also highlights important lessons learned from the disaster, contributing to improved understanding and future risk mitigation strategies. The participation of Portuguese researchers in such international reconnaissance missions is particularly significant, as Portugal currently does not have a formal structure dedicated to post-earthquake field investigations.
