Advancing Composite Materials Across Scales: Insights from Professor Daniel Cardoso

On 26 February 2026, CERIS hosted a seminar titled "Composites Across Scales: Integrating Materials, Mechanics and Structural Design", delivered by Professor Daniel Cardoso (PUC-Rio).

The seminar explored the growing role of composite materials in structural engineering, highlighting their advantages over conventional materials and the challenges associated with their large-scale application.

Professor Cardoso presented a comprehensive multiscale perspective, linking material behaviour to structural performance, and addressed key topics such as creep, fatigue, impact, and durability of cement- and polymer-based composites.

The session also provided valuable insights into the design of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) systems under extreme conditions, as well as current research developments and emerging opportunities in the field.

The seminar brought together members of the CERIS and IST communities, who actively participated in the discussion, reflecting on the practical implications of composite systems and the importance of integrating materials science with structural design.

CERIS would like to express the sincere appreciation to Professor Daniel Cardoso for the insightful seminar and for sharing his knowledge and experience with the community.
