SUMMARY:Pizza Seminar "Ethohydraulics: understanding fish behaviour in flowing waters"
DESCRIPTION:This Pizza Seminar\, hosted within the UNITE! University Network for Innovation\, Technology and Engineering\, explores the emerging field of ethohydraulics—the study of how fish interact with flowing water. Understanding these interactions is essential for designing river infrastructures that are both efficient and environmentally sustainable. \nAt Instituto Superior Técnico\, the UNITE! project is coordinated by Professor Isabel Boavida\, CERIS researcher\, whose work focuses on ecohydraulics and the interaction between hydraulic processes and aquatic ecosystems. \nBringing together experimental\, theoretical\, and modelling approaches\, the seminar will address how fish move\, respond\, and survive in human-altered flows. The session highlights recent advances in hydraulic research\, including innovative tools and concepts that contribute to improved fish passage solutions and more informed river and hydropower management. \nProgramme\n11:30 – 12:00 | Dr. Katharina Bensing (Technical University of Darmstadt)Bridging Hydraulics and Fish Behaviour: Insights from Fish-Shaped ProbesDr. Katharina Bensing is a researcher in hydraulic engineering\, focusing on ethohydraulics and the interaction between biology and fluid mechanics. Her work combines experimental methods and numerical simulations to better understand how fish perceive and respond to hydraulic stimuli\, supporting the design of effective fish passage systems. \n12:00 – 12:30 | Prof. Costantino Manes (Politecnico di Torino)How fast can fish swim and for how long?Prof. Costantino Manes is Associate Professor of Hydraulics\, with research centred on turbulent flows and their interaction with biological systems. His work provides key insights into fish swimming performance and endurance under varying flow conditions. \n12:30 – 13:00 | Prof. Stefan Hoerner (INP Grenoble)Virtual Fish: Cutting-Edge Design and Modelling Tools for Fish Passage in Human-Altered FlowsProf. Stefan Hoerner is an Associate Professor with expertise in fluid mechanics and hydraulic machinery. SUMMARY:OPEN DAY of the HY4RES project
DESCRIPTION:Developing Hybrid Systems for Renewable Energy in Energy Communities: strengthening local energy resilience\nOn 8 April\, an Open Day event of the HY4RES project will take place. \nDuring the event\, the Pilot Installation in Portugal will be inaugurated in Paredes\, on the Sousa River\, at Moinho do Salto. This initiative demonstrates how historical and cultural heritage can be revitalised through cutting-edge technology\, by transforming an old watermill into a micro-hydropower and hybrid energy solution for a small community. \nThe project aims to maximise energy efficiency while preserving heritage and promoting sustainability. It also supports the decentralisation of energy production through microgeneration\, enhances energy independence\, and contributes to reducing both costs and carbon footprint. \n \nThe event is part of the European Sustainable Energy Days 2026\, promoted by EUSEW2026 \nProfessor Helena Ramos is one of the coordinators\, representing CERIS and IST. \nRegistration is free but mandatory. Please register HERE \nSee the provisional programme below: \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nThe Project\nThe objective of the European HY4RES project\, which has €2.4 million in funding from the ERDF\, is to increase the penetration of renewable energies in the Atlantic Area (AA)\, through the development and demonstration of low-cost hybrid renewable energy systems by balancing the variable availability of wind\, solar and hydro energy. \nThe project contributes to the specific objective of energy transition and decarbonization\, promoting energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the community energy\, agriculture\, aquaculture and port sectors. The HY4RES Project includes 4 EU countries (Ireland\, Portugal\, Spain and France) where four Pilot Plants are being developed in the aforementioned areas. \nThere are nine project partners\, namely: Trinity College Dublin (Ireland)\, University of Córdoba (Spain)\, University of Oviedo (Spain)\, Técnico – University of Lisbon (Portugal)\, Vertigo Lab (France)\, Ig Energy (Portugal)\, AC3A (France)\, Feragua (Spain) and EasyHydro (Ireland). \n \nRead more: Project Website\nSign up to the project´s Newsletter\nJoin project´s LinkedIn Community: HY4RES on LinkedIn
